Lumière

Mira Opalińska—piano, Douglas Whates—bass

Lumière features Opalińska & Whates’s arrangements of music initially scored for arthouse film. “Rikyu”, “Tokyo.Sora”, part one of “Cinema Paradiso”, and the outer sections of “Blade Runner” are, in essence, reorchestrations of the original work. The remaining pieces, while similarly reorchestrated, use their respective themes and forms as the stimuli for improvisation.

Apart from referencing light and contrast in music (“lumière” is the french word for light), the title of this album pays tribute to Auguste and Louis Lumière, inventors of the Cinématographe Lumière motion-picture camera and projection system, and pioneers of early cinema.
